Understanding AI, its uses and your rights: the ICIA Reference is now available

Artificial intelligence means computer systems capable of doing things once associated with human intelligence: understanding a text, recognising an image, answering a question, producing content, making a decision. It is neither a consciousness, nor magic, nor a digital brain. It is computation, on a scale that is hard to grasp. And in just a few years, this technology has moved out of the laboratories and into our phones, our schools, our public services and our jobs. It is precisely because AI now concerns all of us that ICIA is launching its Reference today.

You have questions. That is normal

Perhaps you are wondering whether AI will change your job. Whether your children are allowed to use it at school. Whether you can trust it when it answers you. Whether your data is safe. Whether you have any rights when a decision is made about you by an algorithm. What the law allows, what it forbids, what belongs to fantasy and what is real.

These questions are not naive. They are the right ones. And yet clear answers are often hard to find. On one side, voices promising that AI will solve everything. On the other, voices announcing catastrophe. Between the two, a great deal of noise, few landmarks, and a persistent feeling of being kept away from a subject that directly concerns us.

What this Reference is

The ICIA Reference is a collection of articles that answer, one by one, the concrete questions people ask about artificial intelligence. It is built on a few simple principles.

The answer first. Each article begins by answering the question, plainly, in the opening lines. You do not have to read a whole page to know what it is about.

Verifiable over opinion. When an article states that a practice is prohibited, it cites the text that prohibits it. When it gives a figure, it names the source. You can check for yourself, and you should.

Everyday language. No needless jargon. Every technical term is explained. This Reference is built on the conviction that you can understand AI without being an engineer, because it is true.

Neutrality. ICIA sells nothing and recommends no commercial product. The aim is not to make you buy anything, but to make you able to understand and decide for yourself.

What this Reference is not

It is not a technical course to turn you into a specialist. Nor is it a manifesto for or against AI. You will find neither promises nor threats here, but facts, law and methods. It is not a source of final truth: the field moves fast, especially the law, and every article carries a verification date. We would rather tell you honestly what is established, what is uncertain and what remains debated, than decide in your place.

How to use it

Why ICIA is doing this

Understanding AI is no longer a luxury for the curious. It has become a condition for exercising concrete rights: challenging an automated decision, protecting your data, evaluating information, training, working. When a subject touches everyone's life this deeply, leaving it to specialists alone opens a divide. Some understand and act. The others simply endure.

The Institut Collectif de l'Intelligence Artificielle is a non-profit association under the French 1901 law. Its mission is to make AI understandable to everyone, to build skills, to reduce divides and to feed an informed debate. This Reference is one of the tools of that mission. It is free, because understanding AI is a matter of collective interest, not of commerce.
