What is an AI agent and how is it different from a chatbot?

A chatbot answers, an agent acts: it chains actions, uses tools, navigates, executes multi-step tasks with a goal. This growing autonomy shifts questions of responsibility and control, and receives specific regulatory attention in Europe.

#AI agents

A chatbot responds, an agent acts. A classical conversational assistant produces a response and stops. An AI agent chains actions to achieve a goal: it can use tools, navigate, fill forms, execute a multi-step task, decide the next step based on the result of the previous one. This growing autonomy shifts questions of control and responsibility, and is the subject of specific regulatory attention in Europe.

What distinguishes an agent

The goal rather than the question. You do not just ask it a question, you entrust it with an objective: book, compare, organize, perform.

The use of tools. An agent can call other software, access services, launch searches. It is not limited to generating text.

The action loop. It acts, observes the result, adjusts, acts again, until it reaches its goal or fails.

What this changes for you

The potential is real: delegating tedious digital tasks. The risk is equally real. An agent that acts on your behalf can make consequential mistakes, incur an expense, send a message, change a setting. The greater the autonomy, the more human supervision matters.

Two precautions are golden. Require confirmation before any irreversible or sensitive action, especially financial. Never entrust an agent with sensitive credentials without understanding what it does with them.

The framework under construction

Agents concentrate responsibility issues: who answers for the actions of an autonomous system. Ordinary liability law applies and always traces back to people — designer, deployer or user. The European AI regulation also governs transparency and supervision, particularly for high-risk uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an agent smarter than a chatbot?

No, it is more autonomous. It can act, not just respond.

Can I trust it to act alone?

With caution. Keep control over irreversible and sensitive actions.

Who is responsible if an agent makes a mistake?

Always people. An AI has no legal personality.
